Mansfield Local Offices

All locally elected officials are elected in odd-numbered years except where noted otherwise below.  Local officials, except the Registrar of Voters and the Probate Judge, serve without pay.

MANSFIELD TOWN COUNCIL:  Nine members serve two-year terms.  The minority set aside rule requires that three members come from the minority political party (the Republicans).   The Town Council elects the Mayor from among Town Council members.  The Mayor appoints the Deputy Mayor from among Town Council members.

PLANNING & ZONNING COMMISSION (PZC) & INLAND-WETLAND AGENCY (IWA):

Nine members serve staggered six-year terms.  The minority set aside rule requires that three members come from the minority political party (the Republicans). Three alternates serve two-year terms.  The minority set aside rule requires that one alternate come from the minority political party.  (The IWA is comprised of PZC members, but has separate meetings from the PZC.)

ZONING BOARD OF APPEALS:  Five members serve four-year staggered terms.  The minority set aside rule requires that two members come from the minority political party (the Republicans).  Three alternates serve two-year terms. The minority set aside rule requires that one alternate come from the minority political party.

BOARD OF ASSESSMENT APPEALS:  Three members serve two-year terms.  The minority sat aside rule requires that one member come from the minority political party.

MANSFIELD BOARD OF EDUCATION (K – 8): Nine members serve staggered six-year terms.  The minority set aside rule requires that three members come from the minority political party.

REGION 19 BOARD OF EDUCATION:    E. O. Smith High School is a regional high school serving Mansfield, Willington, and Ashford.   Each town elects four Board members to represent the town for four-year terms.

REGISTRAR OF VOTERS:  There are two Registrars of Voters: a Democratic Registrar of Voters and a Republican Registrar of Voters.  The Registrars of Voters serve two year terms with elections in even-numbered years.  This is a part-time, paid position.

JUDGE OF PROBATE:  The Tolland-Mansfield Probate Court serves the towns of Tolland, Mansfield, Coventry and Willington.  The Probate Judge is elected by the combined vote totals from all four towns.  The Probate Judge serves four-year terms with elections in even-numbered years.  This is a full-time, paid position.
