Candidates for state and federal elected offices receive the Democratic party’s nomination at conventions held for this purpose in the late spring/summer before the November election. Each Democratic Town Committees sends delegate to the nominating conventions. The Mansfield Democratic Town Committee selects delegates to the nominating conventions, but does not obligate the delegates to vote for a certain candidate.
State-wide elected officials & U. S. Senator
A Democratic State Convention, consisting of delegates who are elected by the Democratic Town Committees in all the towns and cities in Connecticut, nominates the Democratic candidates for U. S. Senator and for state government offices – Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Treasurer, Comptroller, Secretary of State, and Attorney General.
Primary: Candidates who fail to get the Democratic party’s nomination at the convention may file to run in a primary. The primary is held in August.
State Representatives
Mansfield has two state representatives to the General Assembly – the 54th and 48th General Assembly Districts.
The Mansfield Democratic Town Committee elects the delegates who reside in the parts of Mansfield that lie within the 54th General Assembly Districtto attend the Democratic 54th General Assembly District convention, which nominates the Democratic candidate for this General Assembly seat.
The Mansfield Democratic Town Committee also elects the delegates who reside in the parts of Mansfield that lie within the 48th General Assembly District to attend the Democratic 48th General Assembly District convention, which nominates the Democratic candidate for this General Assembly seat. This convention also has delegates elected by the Democratic Town Committees to represent the parts of the following towns that are included in this district: Windham, Lebanon, Colchester, and Mansfield.

The Mansfield Democratic Town Committee elects delegates to attend the Democratic 29th State Senate District convention, which nominates the Democratic candidate for this State Senate seat. The convention also has delegates who are elected by the Democratic Town Committees from the following towns that are in the 29th State Senate District – Brooklyn, Canterbury, Killingly, Mansfield, Putnam, Scotland, Thompson, and Windham.
